Aqueous Film-Forming Foam

Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, also known as AFFF, is used by firefighters to put out fires. This foam cuts off all oxygen causing the fire to die out. Harmful chemicals like perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in AFFF. Health organizations like The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have stated that PFAS may be causing cancer in firefighters. People who have worked as airport or military firefighters are at high risk of PFA exposure. AFFF is mainly used for fuel or liquid fires which is why it is used often at airports. AFFF has also been heavily used by the military since 1960.

Cancers associated with PFAS include:

  • Bladder Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Liver
  • Lymphoma
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
