What are Homeopathic teething tablets?

Homeopathic teething tablets manufactured by Hyland or sold under the CVS brand have been discovered to have inconsistent and elevated amounts of belladonna, a poisonous plant of the nightshade family. This device is made for teething children to reduce irritability and restlessness. It is currently the #1 infant oral pain reliever in America. It is commercialized as an easy to use, durable product that relives the pain that comes with teething.

What are the risks of using this product?

The FDA has received reports that children and infants who were exposed to this teething device have suffered serious implications after ingestion of these products: loss of consciousness, seizures, episodes of sleepiness, lethargy, difficulty with or slowed breathing, and even death.

How was Hyland negligent with manufacturing the Homeopathic teething products?

Hyland’s Homeopathic teething products claimed to be safe since they entered market. The product came in a quick-dissolve tablet or a gel topically applied to the infant’s gums. The ingredients that comprised the product were said to be “all natural.” One of the “natural” ingredients used is belladonna. It was used to reduce symptoms of redness and inflammation of the gums. However, the levels of this ingredient were inconsistent and higher than allowed by FDA regulation.

What has the FDA done to prevent further injuries?

The FDA issued safety alerts since 2010; however, the manufacturer refused to take the product off shelves. In clinical trials administered by the FDA between 2006 and 2016, 8 out of 370 infants died after using the product. Since 2016, there have been at least 10 deaths, and hundreds of babies that suffered health implications. After several warnings, Hyland decided to stop manufacturing and selling its teething tablets in 2017; nevertheless, it did not issue a recall on the products that were already in the homes of the public.
