Hair Relaxer
Hair relaxer products use substances that increase the risk of prostate, endometrial, uterine and breast cancer. The FDA requires companies to list the ingredients on the label, however some companies do not list the harmful ingredients in their products. Some of the harmful ingredients in these products include sodium hydroxide, guanidine thioglycolate, ammonium thioglycolate, and dimethyl sulfoxide. A study done by the National Health Interview Survey reported that women that used hair relaxers are at 43 percent higher risk of uterine cancer than women who did not use hair relaxer. Treatment for uterine cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. Survival rate for this type of cancer depends on the stage it is in. Many women filed lawsuits against companies like L’Oreal, Pantene, and Schwarzkopf. People in these cases claim the companies knew how dangerous their ingredients were but continued to use them anyway. Companies should be held accountable for the harm they have caused.
