On February 4, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a drug safety communication, warning of potential serious side effects of a widely used drug treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Psoriatic Arthritis (PSA), and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Ongoing safety trials of the popular prescription drug Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR showed an increased risk of serious heart problems. Xeljanz is also known under its generic name, tofacitinib.

These serious heart problems include blood clots, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The FDA is conducting ongoing surveillance of these side effects and has provided updated guidance to health care providers.
